The Ekkara Music Program, or musical modes, at the Sruti School of Liturgical Music, uses a system of 8 liturgical modes to organize liturgical music for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. These modes are tied to the liturgical calendar and specific feasts, with different modes used for events like Christmas, Easter, Epiphany, and feast days for saints, departed leaders, and sacraments like Baptism and Marriage.
Course Details:
- Content: In this programme the student will get to know about the Syriac eight-mode system (octo-echoes) used in liturgical music, which is organized by the liturgical calendar. The modes, which are considered "colours" or "echoes" rather than strict scales, are used to determine which type of music is sung for specific feasts and seasons, such as Christmas, Easter, and feasts of saints.
- System: The program focuses on the Syriac eight-mode system, known as octo-echoes or Kinotho.
- Purpose: This system is used to organize the liturgical calendar for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
- Function: Different modes are designated for different liturgical periods, such as the first mode for Christmas and Easter, and the eighth mode for feasts of saints.
